Thermocouple Temperature Probes

Thermal Detection manufacture a comprehensive range of high quality thermocouples in type T, J, K, R, S & B in accordance with BS EN 60584-1:2013 and use class 1 material as standard.

A thermocouple is a temperature measurement device based on the Seebeck effect, where dissimilar metals joined together generate an electrical force which is proportionate to the temperature at the join. For a more detailed explanation see our FAQ page.

There are several different thermocouple types in use, but the most common are those shown below.

Type T (Cu/Con)

With one conductor leg in copper and the other in a proprietary material Constanton© (55% copper and 45% nickel). Can be used in temperatures from -200°C to +350°C with high accuracy and is used extensively in Laboratories, Pharmaceutical and Healthcare industries.

Type E (NiCr/Con)

Conductor legs in Chromel© (90% nickel and 10% chromium) and Constantan© (55% copper and 45% nickel). This thermocouple generates a high emf and can be used in temperatures -50°C to +740°C.

Type J (Fe/Con)

Conductor legs in Iron and Constantan© (55% copper and 45% nickel). Can be used in temperatures -40°C to +740°C.

Type K (NiCr/NiAl)

This s the most common thermocouple type and conductor legs are in Chromel© (90% nickel and 10% chromium) and Alumel© (95% nickel, 2% manganese, 2% aluminium  and 1% silicon). Can be used in temperatures -200°C to +1350°C although there is a rapid decline in accuracy when used above +1000°C.

Type N (NiCrSi/NiSiMg)

Conductor legs in Nicrosil© (14.4% nickel, 1.4% silicon and 0.1% magnesium) and Nisil© (95.5% nickel, 4.4% silicon and 0.1% magnesium). Can be used in temperatures -270°C to +1300°C.

Type R (Pt-13%Rh/Pt)

Conductor legs in platinum (100%) and 87% platinum / 13% rhodium. Can be used up to 1300°C, but very little emf generated below 800°C.

Type S (Pt-10%Rh/Pt)

Conductor legs in platinum (100%) and 90% platinum / 10% rhodium. Can be used up to 1600°C, but very little emf generated below 800°C.
